How a pick reaches this desk

Every captain call comes with a reasoning paragraph that names the inputs, weights the trade-offs, and flags what could invalidate the call before toss.

The methodology is intentionally narrow. A pick is published when three things are true at once: we have watched the player across the last four to six innings, the role is stable for the next fixture, and the conditions (pitch, opposition, format) support the call.

• Form window. Six-inning rolling average weighted toward recent innings; 50+ ball innings only.
• Role stability. Confirmed batting position from official squad announcements, not from broadcast guesswork.
• Conditions. Surface type, opposition matchup, dew expectation, and toss impact.
• Multiplier fit. Whether a captain pick (2x) is more defensible than a differential (low ownership).

On-field reads behind every captain call

Before publishing a captain pick we look at body language, role fit and the way a player responds to pressure in the previous innings.

Captain picks are not single-name decisions. They combine role, recent form, surface, opposition matchup, and a multiplier that changes the upside. The team huddle tells you who is calm under pressure and who is feeling the moment — and that is exactly the read our picks desk is looking for.

For every match we publish we also publish a vice-captain call. The vice-captain (1.5x) is calibrated to maximise points if your captain (2x) misses out due to a duck, a rain interruption, or a role change announced after lock-in.

Reading the next fixture on a phone, not on a desktop

Most picks are read on the way to the ground or in the last 90 minutes before lock-in. The reading flow on mobile is intentional — short paragraphs, clear captain names, and verified access links.

The mobile reading experience is a deliberate editorial choice. Long captions and tabbed tables do not survive a slow mobile network at 7pm. Each match preview keeps the captain and vice-captain names in the first 200 characters, then unpacks the why-now reasoning, the conditions and the multiplier logic.

Role-first squad construction beats player-first every time

Picking 11 players by name feels easier. Picking by role first — wicketkeeper, batter, all-rounder, bowler — produces a more defensible squad when one or two players fail.

The role-first approach splits the 11 into 1 wicketkeeper, 3-5 batters, 1-3 all-rounders, and 3-5 bowlers. Total 11. The split depends on format and contest type, but the discipline stays the same: allocate salary by role scarcity, not by reputation.

Wicketkeeper is the highest-scoring role per credit in T20 because of stumpings and catches behind the stumps. All-rounder is the second-highest because they deliver in both innings. Bowlers in death overs are the third because wickets and dot balls both score heavily.

Read the pitch before you read the team sheet

Pitches determine whether your bowlers or your batters will carry the squad. The picks desk does not publish a call until the surface read is in.

The pitch read starts 48 hours before the match, not 48 minutes. Look at the grass coverage, the dry patches around the length mark, and the way the outfield holds water after the previous fixture. Spinners prefer dry, cracking surfaces. Fast bowlers prefer grass and bounce. Batters prefer flat decks with even bounce.

Dew is the single biggest late-evening variable in Indian conditions. If dew is expected in the second innings, the side batting second gains a meaningful advantage — which is why toss decisions and captain picks shift at 6:30pm.

Powerplay picks depend on the surface

On flat decks, powerplay anchors carry the squad. On two-paced decks, the middle-overs accumulator becomes the captain.

Powerplay picks in IPL are not about the most aggressive batter. They are about the batter whose strike rate stays above 130 against pace on a true surface, and above 110 against spin on a slow surface. The captain pick from the powerplay needs the innings to last 10+ balls, ideally 25+.

When the deck is two-paced, the powerplay batter often makes 18 off 14 and gets out trying to break the shackles. That is a -2 fantasy result. Our picks desk flags this risk in the reasoning paragraph and frequently moves the captain call to a middle-overs accumulator on slow decks.

Death-overs bowlers are the quiet captain pick

Public contests overweight batters. Death-overs bowlers often carry higher ceiling at lower ownership — which is what differentials are made of.

Death-overs bowlers score on three axes: dot balls (1-2 points), wickets (25 points), and economy bonus (4-6 points). A bowler who delivers 4 overs at 8 rpo with 2 wickets can return 60-80 fantasy points — comparable to a top-order batter who makes 70 off 40.

The catch is that death-overs bowlers are owned by 12-18% of public contest entries, not 60-80%. The leverage is therefore substantial. When our reads point to a death-overs wicket, we will publish the call as a differential captain and accept the lower ownership risk.

A prediction is a probability band, not a single call

Our pre-match predictions are framed as probability bands, not guarantees. A 60-40 call is honest; a 90-10 call is rarely defensible in T20.

The prediction workflow starts with a pitch read, moves to team news verification, then to opposition matchup analysis, then to toss impact. The output is a probability band — usually 55-45 or 60-40 — paired with a captain call that reflects the lean.

We do not predict exact scores, wickets, or player milestones. Those predictions look confident on Twitter and fail on average. Probability bands let us explain why a 55-45 call moved to 60-40 after toss without losing the reader.

Verify the team sheet before you lock the captain

A published playing XI is the single most important input for fantasy picks. Until it is official, the captain call is provisional.

The team news verification workflow uses three sources: the operator’s official social channels, the league’s published squad announcements, and the toss-time update from the venue. We do not lock a captain call until two of three sources align.

If the team sheet changes after our preview is published, we update the captain, vice-captain, and differential in line and add a one-line note explaining the swap. The picks desk page is the canonical reference; blog posts are written for context.

Batter vs bowler matchups beat aggregate form

A batter averaging 45 in the season can still average 12 against one specific bowler. Matchup reads are the picks desk’s unfair advantage.

The matchup analysis combines three datasets: head-to-head history, recent dismissal patterns, and the bowler’s wicket zones. A batter who has been dismissed leg-before to right-arm spin three times in a row is a weak captain pick against a quality off-spinner, even if their season average is 50.

Conversely, a batter who has averaged 80 against a particular fast bowler across formats is a strong captain pick, especially on a flat surface where the bowler cannot afford to bowl wide. Matchup reads take 30 minutes to build per match but they save dozens of captain calls per season.

Spend credits where the points come from

The salary cap is not a popularity contest. Spend credits on the roles that score the most, not on the names with the biggest marketing budgets.

The budget strategy starts with role weights. Wicketkeeper: 8-12% of credits. Top-order anchors: 25-30%. Middle-overs batters: 12-18%. All-rounders: 18-22%. Bowlers: 20-28%. Captain and vice-captain are usually drawn from the top-order and all-rounder bucket.

The mistake most new pickers make is to spend heavily on the biggest name. The biggest name often returns 35-45 points; a mid-priced differential in the same role can return 65-75 because their ownership is 8% not 60%. Spend credits where the points-per-credit ratio is highest.

Differentials win large contests, not leagues

A differential is a player with low ownership who scores above their credit. They win mega contests and lose head-to-heads. Match the pick to the contest.

Differentials are fielders, part-time bowlers, and middle-order batters in low-ownership roles. They win mega contests because they break the tie when the top-order anchors cancel out across thousands of entries.

The picks desk publishes a differential pick for every match preview. The pick is always framed with the contest type in mind — a differential is the right call in a 10,000-entry mega, and the wrong call in a 50-entry head-to-head. We name the contest type in the reasoning paragraph.
